VALLEY MILLS – Having won three of their last four matches, the Clifton Lady Cub volleyball team will be put to the test when they hit the road to take on Bosque County rival Valley Mills at 4:30 p.m. Friday

Coming off a strong showing at the Dublin Tournament last weekend, the Lady Cubs (10-11) swept past Marlin in straight sets, 25-21, 25-12, 25-17, at home Tuesday.

“The girls work hard to find four to eight-point runs they can take,” Clifton volleyball’s first-year head coach Paige Poth said. “And in this game, they had many of runs that kept their energy up and momentum going.

“The first game, we were behind and had trouble starting, but ended up catching up and closing the game. The second game, the girls played well start-to-close, and I was very excited with our results. I was very pleased overall with the way we played.”

Class 2A’s ninth-ranked Valley Mills (13-3) will put an eight-match winning streak on the line against the Lady Cubs.

“ Valley Mills will be a good competition for us,” Poth said. “Again, any chance we can get to test and work our defense, we are excited and ready to face the challenge. The girls came in with two good practices following Marlin, and all the small things we were looking to fix are all starting to come together.

“Our competition from here on out will be tough, but preparing us for district.”

With two weeks remaining before district competition, Clifton will open District 17-3A play Sept. 13 by hosting Harmony Science Academy. The power-packed district also includes Class 3A’s 22nd-ranked West (20-4), 24th-ranked Maypearl (11-5), Grandview (11-5), Whitney (17-9), Rio Vista and Keene.
