TROPHY TRADITION: Morgan boys win historic McGehee tourney title

MORGAN – Playing host to the 62nd Annual R.W. McGehee Memorial Basketball Tournament, the Morgan Eagles boys rose to the occasion to capture the championship trophy with resounding 82-70 victory over the Evant Elks Saturday, Dec. 14.

“It’s really awesome to win this tournament,” Morgan boys basketball head coach Jeff Harrison said. “This is a huge tradition around here for our community. We knew coming in we had a chance to win it. To do that and see everyone so exciting was really amazing.”

Morgan (9-3) opened the tournament with a 55-47 win over Penelope Thursday before the Eagles soared past Bosque County rival Cranfills Gap, 72-63 Friday. Gustine claimed third place with a 57-50 victory over Cranfills Gap Saturday, while Abbott captured the consolation title with a 44-22 win over Oglesby.

In the Girls bracket, Abbott clipped the Morgan Lady Eagles, 68-32 in the championship game to claim the tournament title. Walnut Springs knocked off Cranfills Gap, 47-40, to take third place, while Oglesby claimed the consolation title with a 31-28 win over Evant.

ON & OFF THE FIELD: Cubs named to all-district & all-academic squads

CLIFTON – After claiming a share of their third straight District 8-3A, Division II championship, the Clifton Cubs placed seven players on the all-district first-team, and seven more on the second-team, while two drew honorable mention recognition.

Senior wide receiver/defensive back TJ Ferch and senior running back/linebacker Riley Perry made the first-team on both sides of the ball. Also selected to the first team were senior quarterback Mason Brandenberger, junior offensive lineman Robert Cathey, senior defensive lineman Hayden Newton, sophomore defensive end Griffin Phillips and junior linebacker Elias Tebo.

Second-team selections included senior offensive lineman Coley Davis, sophomore defensive end Alex De La Hoya, senior offensive lineman Alex Enriquez, junior offensive lineman Michael McDowell, senior defensive lineman/linebacker Joel Santillan, senior defensive back Weston Schasteen and sophomore linebacker/running back Jimmie Taylor.

Junior placekicker Jose Ramirez, and senior defensive back Everett Sadler drew honorable mentions.

Eliminated in the second round of the playoffs for the sixth straight season, the Cubs (8-4) lost to eventual Class 3A, DII state champion Gunter, 27-14, in the Area Playoff matchup at Waxahachie’s Lumpkins Stadium. Gunter (14-1) knocked off Omaha Pewitt, 43-22, for the state title last Thursday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

“I’m proud for all of these kids to be recognized by the district coaches,” Clifton football head coach Chuck Caniford said. “I’m especially proud of the number of guys we had who qualified for the Academic All-District team.”

Cubs being named to the Academic All-District Team were junior Tyler Anderson, junior Brooks Bizzell, junior Devin Byrd, senior Colby Caniford, senior Coley Davis, senior Alex Enriquez, junior Jerome Ridgel, senior Jake Sparkman, freshman Joe Taylor, Brandenberger, Cathey, Ferch, Newton, Perry, Phillips, Santillan, Schasteen, and Tebo.

“To put in the time commitment football requires and still excel in the classroom takes a lot of hard work and time management skills,” Caniford said. “I’m proud of these kids for the work that they put in.”
