SNAPPING SKID: Cubs end two-game losing streak vs. Rio Vista, 48-34

CLIFTON – Getting back on track in the District 17-3A playoff race, the Clifton Cub boys basketball team snapped a two-game losing streak with a convincing 48-34 victory over the Rio Vista Eagles Tuesday night in the Clifton High School Gymnasium.

Clifton (2-2 in district, 14-6 overall) will try to make it two in a row today when the Cubs travel to Maypearl (3-1, 10-7) for a 7:30 p.m. game in their quest to earn a playoff berth for the first time in 14 years.

In other District 17-3A action Tuesday night, Grandview overwhelmed Maypearl, 78-32, Whitney knocked off Keene, and West defeated Harmony.

Friday’s district matchups include a showdown for first place with Whitney (4-0, 8-8) hosting Grandview (4-0, 12-12), while Keene (2-2, 8-8) will travel to Waco to play Harmony School of Innovation (0-4, 0-6), and West (1-3, 11-10) visits Rio Vista (1-3, 7-13).

SNAPPING BACK: Lady Cubs dominate Rio Vista, 42-19

CLIFTON – Snapping a four-game losing streak, the Clifton Lady Cub girls basketball team ran over the Rio Vista Lady Eagles, 42-19, Tuesday night at the Clifton High School Gymnasium.

The Lady Cubs (2-4 in district, 11-14 overall) will try to take another step toward getting back into the playoff chase when they visit the Maypearl Lady Panthers (4-2, 17-6) at 6 p.m.

After blanking the Lady Eagles in the first quarter, Clifton outscored Rio Vista, 15-3, to take a commanding 24-3 lead into halftime before coasting to victory.

Featuring a balanced offensive attack with no one scoring in double figures, the Lady Cubs were led by senior Kamryn Kettler with nine points, followed by senior Naomi Sedberry with eight and senior Sutton Finney with seven. Senior Dacey Dieticker dominated the boards with 12 rebounds, followed by Kettler with 10, while Finney grabbed four steals and dished out two assists.

“The girls had another great defensive night, they played with intensity the entire game,” Clifton girls basketball head coach Whitney Holdbrook said. “All of their hard work in practice is starting to show on  offensive.”

In other District 17-3A action Tuesday night, Grandview edged Maypearl, 44-39, West dominated Harmony School of Innovation, 66-11, and Whitney crushed Keene.

Friday’s district matchups include Whitney (5-1, 22-4) hosting 12th-ranked Grandview (5-1, 21-4), 22nd-ranked West (5-1, 20-5) visiting Rio Vista (1-5, 2-10) and Keene (2-4, 7-8) takes on Harmony (0-6, 1-7).
