TIME OUT: Lady Jackets look for first district win after week off

in Girls Basketball

SANTO – Opening District 10-2A competition with back-to-back losses to state-ranked teams, the Meridian Lady Jacket girls basketball team will take a week off following a 59-25 loss to 25th-ranked Santo last Tuesday night.

Meridian (0-2 in district, 14-10 overall) will be looking for its first district victory when the Lady Jackets visit DeLeon (1-2, 7-8) Tuesday at 6:15 p.m.

Santo jumped out to a 12-6 first quarter lead before pouring in 20 points in the second period to build a commanding 32-10 advantage before intermission.

“The Lady Jackets fell to a very strong Santo team,” Meridian girls basketball head coach Jill Kendall said. “Just wasn’t our night.”

Senior Dakota Cassidy led Meridian with nine points, while senior Jada Crawford pulled down a team-high seven rebounds, senior Reese Errington dished out four assists and senior Mallory Paruszewski grabbed three steals.

In other District 10-2A action Tuesday night, DeLeon slipped by 14th-ranked Hico, 34-32. Friday’s matchups featured 22nd-ranked Goldthwaite knocking off Hico, 52-30, Santo taking down DeLeon, 40-25, while Meridian had an open date.

ON A WINNING NOTE: Jackets open District 10-2A at DeLeon

in Boys Basketball

MERIDIAN – Before taking 10 days leading into District 10-2A competition, the Meridian Yellowjacket boys basketball team snapped a two-game skid with a solid 58-23 victory over the Itasca junior varsity Jan. 3 at Yellowjacket Gymnasium.

After having an open date last Friday, the Jackets (8-14) hope to carry that momentum into their district opener at DeLeon (1-0 in district, 12-13 overall) Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

“It was a great game for our boys, much needed before we dive into district,” Meridian boys basketball head coach Carlos Johansson said. “We’ve been using the off week to amp up our practice and prepare for De Leon.”

After losing twice to Itasca earlier in the season, the Jackets wasted no time getting some revenge as Meridian built a commanding 26-2 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.

Senior Demarius Parks poured in a game-high 20 points, followed by senior Zade Kendall with 17 points, five rebounds, five assists and six steals. Junior Dylan Poole pulled down five boards, dished out four assists and grabbed five steals while contributing six points, and freshman David Watson tossed in seven points.

District 10-2A play began last Friday with Goldthwaite crushing Hico, 75-20 while DeLeon rolled past Santo, 46-28.
