CLASS 1A FRIDAY FLASHBACK
WEEK 9: Contenders begin to spate from the pretenders in Class 1A six-man football with two weeks remaining in the regular season across the Heart of Texas
Although only one undefeated six-man football team remains in the Heart of Texas region, the favorites to earn trips to the Class 1A postseason began to emerge in each district with two weeks left in the Texas high school football regular season.
Class 1A, Division I defending state champion Blum Bobcats solidified it spot at the top of District 11-1A, DI with a dominating 52-7 victory over the Bynum Bulldogs last Friday night.
As the Heart of Texas’s only undefeated team, the 14th-ranked Abbott Panthers convincingly disposed of the second place Coolidge Yellow Jackets, 58-13, to move closer to claiming the District 12-1A, DI title.
In District 15-1A, DI action, the 11th-ranked Jonesboro Eagles blanked the Zephyr Bulldogs, while the 26th-ranked Lometa Hornets outscored the Evant Elks, 52-40, to set up a showdown for first place this week.
In Class 1A, DII action, the 11th-ranked Strawn Greyhounds and the 15th-ranked Gordon Longhorns took control of District 11-1A, DII with domination wins as Strawn blanked the Gustine Tigers, 64-0, while Gordon made quick work of the Three Way Braves, 52-6.
Covid-19 and the injury big helped to decided the playoff chase in District 12-1A, DII as the 18th-ranked Morgan Eagles and the 26th-ranked Walnut Springs Hornets clinched postseason berths and set up a showdown for the district title. Prior to hosting Walnut Springs, the Iredell Dragons shut down their season due to injuries. And the Cranfills Gap Lions saw 2020 come to an end during an open date since their final two opponents can’t finish the season.
Likewise, the District 12-1A, DII front-running Oglesby Tigers claimed a forfeit win over the Mount Calm Panthers in their district opener, while the 21st-ranked Blanket Tigers knocked off the 24th-ranked Sidney Eagles, 52-28, to take over first place in District 15-1A, DII.
