CLASS 1A PLAYOFFS: State Semifinals

in Roundups

Looking to repeat, the Class 1A, DI defending state champion Blum Bobcats surprisingly survive again while Class 1A, DII’s Richland Springs surprised no one by advancing

THE SPORTS BUZZ Gridiron Matchups presents the Class 1A Six-Man football State Semifinal matchups from across the state of Texas.

Continuing their unlikely through the Class 1A, Division I playoffs, the defending state champion Blum Bobcats (9-3) pulled off yet another upset, this time coming from behind to knock off the ninth-ranked and previously-undefeated Union Hill Bulldogs (11-1) in the State Quarterfinals Saturday in Mabank.

In the meantime, the fourth-ranked May Tigers (12-1) dismantled eighth-ranked Leakey (11-2), 72-38 to set up a State Semifinal showdown with Blum at 6 p.m. Saturday in Dublin. In the other Class 1A, DI state semifinal matchup, top-ranked and undefeated Sterling City (13-0) will face second-ranked Borden County (11-2) at 5 p.m. Saturday in Sweetwater.

The Class 1A, Division II defending state champion and fifth-ranked Richland Springs Coyotes hung on to eliminate the seventh-ranked Calvert Trojans, 48-34, in a Class 1A, Division II State Quarterfinal matchup Friday night at Hico’s historic Tiger Stadium.

Getting one step closer to claiming their 10th state championship since 2004, the Coyotes (11-0) knocked off Calvert (9-3) for the ninth time in 12 postseason showdowns since 2002. Trailing 48-14 early in the third quarter, the Trojans scored 20 unanswered points to make the enthusiastic Richland Springs faithful uneasy until the final second ticked off the clock.

Seeking their fifth state title since 2003, the eighth-ranked Strawn Greyhounds (11-2) buried 11th-ranked Fannindel, 54-6, Friday night in Italy to set up yet another classic showdown with Richland Springs at 6:30 p.m. Friday in Dublin.

This will be the fifth time since 2003 that the Greyhounds and the Coyotes has squared off in either the state quarterfinals or state semifinals with Richland Springs winning three. Richland Springs and Strawn have combined to win 13 state titles since 2003.

In the other Class 1A, DII state semifinal matchup, top-ranked Balmorhea (10-1) will face second-ranked Groom (12-1) at 7 p.m. Friday in Hermleigh.

PUTTING IT ON THE LINE: Picking Heart of Texas Area Playoff games, NCAA college football games in Texas, as well as the Cowboys & the Texans

While picking winners for the 2020 Texas high school football postseason tournament , a handful of NCAA college football games in Texas as well as the Dallas Cowboys and the Houston Texans, THE SPORTS BUZZ Gridiron Gurus saw Covid-19 precautions create some cancellations and forfeits.

Joining THE SPORTS BUZZ Gridiron Gurus pick’ems panel this season will be Don Nicholas, Field Representative for U.S. Congressman Roger Williams (TX-25), while Meridian Yellowjacket football head coach Wade Morton, The Sports Buzz  photographer David Harding and The Sports Buzz’ Brett Voss return from last year.

For the record, David came out on top this week by exclusively picking May over Jonesboro in the Class 1A, DII playoffs, as well as the Texas over the Patriots in the NFL. Other great picks included Wade as the only one selecting Lexington over Taft in Class 3A, DII, while Brett had two exclusive picks, Union Hill over Abbott and Calvert over Cherokee in  the six-man playoffs.

On the flip side, though, Brett proved to be the loser as the only one to pick Saint Jo beating Blum.

Join us every Thursday throughout the rest of the 2020 football season as THE SPORTS BUZZ Gridiron Gurus pick their winners for a select group of the week’s high school playoff games, your favorite college teams from the NCAA Div. I, Div. II and Div. III, as well as the state’s two NFL teams, the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans.

Be sure to make your picks as well!

Jentsch threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more as the Zebras posted their 37th victory in the last 38 games and notched their 14th consecutive postseason win.

Grandview advances the Regional round to take on fourth-ranked Malakoff (9-2) at 1p.m. Friday at Waco ISD Stadium, in a rematch of the 2018 Class 3A DI state championship game.  The Zebras also opened the 2020 season with a 31-24 overtime victory over Malakoff.

Trailing 24-7 in the fourth quarter, West mounted a late rally when junior Wyatt Wolf returned a punt 76 yards for a touchdown before hauling in a six-yard scoring strike from quarterback Landon Edwards with 38 seconds remaining. But after West sophomore T.J. McCutcheon recovered the ensuing onside kick, the Mount Vernon defense came up with the stop to secure the victory.

In a Class 3A, DI Region III Area playoff action, the Lorena Leopards (9-2) advanced by a Covid-related forfeit win over Crockett (7-5). Lorena advances to the Regional Semifinals to face Hallettsville (10-2) at 6:30 p.m. Friday in Wimberley’s Texan Stadium.

Crawford & Bosqueville get one step closer to rematch with impressive Class2A, DI Area playoff wins; Class 2A, DII’s three-time defending state champion Mart marches on

THE SPORTS BUZZ Gridiron Matchups presents the Class 2A football Regional Semifinal playoff matchups from across the Heart of Texas region.

Widely considered one of the toughest Class 2A, Division I districts in the state, District 7-2A, DI advanced three of its four postseason qualifiers to the Area round before whittling it down to two survivors last week.

The seventh-ranked Crawford Pirates (11-1) remained undefeated on the field with another overwhelming postseason victory, this time chopping up Bogota Rivercrest, 44-6, in a Region II Area playoff matchup last Friday night at Grand Prairie’s Gopher-Warrior Bowl.

Crawford senior quarterback Tanner Merenda tossed five touchdown passes as the Pirates built a 44-0 lead before the end of the third quarter. With their only loss coming to a COVID-related forfeit to Valley Mills, the Pirates advance to the regional semifinals to take on surprising Alvord (6-4) at 7 p.m. Friday in Alvarado’s Head Stadium.

Proving to be equally dominating, district runner-up Bosqueville Bulldogs (8-3) used a strong second half to lock down a convincing 44-12 victory over Cooper in an Area playoff showdown last Friday in Rusk’s Eagle Stadium.

Bosqueville quarterback Luke Bradshaw connected with Ryder Roard on two scoring strikes while running for another touchdown as the Bulldogs built a 25-12 halftime lead before putting the game away with 19 unanswered second half points.

With the win, Bosqueville moves on to face undefeated and fifth-ranked Lindsay (11-0) at 6 p.m. Friday in Aledo’s Bearcat Stadium. Lindsay eliminated the Tolar Rattlers, 69-20, last Friday night at River Oaks’Barnes Memorial Stadium.

Despite getting a Covid-related forfeited win in their Class 2A, DII Bi-District playoff matchup, the three-time defending state champion Mart Panthers (11-0) did not look rusty in their dominating 48-12 Area playoff victory over Lovelady (7-5) last Friday night at Caldwell’s Hornet Field.

Playing their first game since Oct. 31, the Panthers scored quickly and often in the first half. Mart racked up five touchdowns on only 12 plays from scrimmage to build a commanding 34-0 halftime lead. Roddrell Freeman, Keishawn Clater and Neven Hickman ran for two touchdowns apiece in the rout.

Mart advances to the Region III semifinals to face West Sabine (7-4) at 6 p.m. Friday in Crockett’s Driskell Stadium. West Sabine eliminated Simms Bowie, 26-20, in an Area matchup last week.

Defying the prognosticators, the Class 1A, DI defending state champion Blum Bobcats knock off 14th-ranked Saint Jo to continue march toward repeat

THE SPORTS BUZZ Gridiron Matchups presents the Class 1A Six-Man football State Quarterfinal matchups from across the Heart of Texas region.

In Class 1A, Division I postseason action, the defending state champion Blum Bobcats (8-3) continued their march toward a repeat with a 56-28 Region III Area playoff win over 14th-ranked Saint Jo (9-2) Friday night at Bridgeport.

Despite a five touchdown effort from senior Kadyn Johnson, the 16th-ranked Abbott Panthers (11-1) suffered their first loss of the season at the worst possible time to be eliminated from the playoffs with a 76-42 loss to the ninth-ranked and undefeated Union Hill Bulldogs (11-0) Friday night at Scurry Rosser.

Johnson ran for 305 yards, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Bulldogs pounding their way to 507 yards on the ground. Union Hill’s Christian Aguillon ran for four touchdowns while Zak Hatcher rushed for three scores as the Bulldogs wore down Abbott in the second half.

In the Region III State Quarterfinal, Blum will take on Union Hill at 6 p.m. Saturday at Mabank.

In Region IV, the fourth-ranked May Tigers (11-1) shot down the 12th-ranked Jonesboro Eagles (10-2) in convincing fashion, 62-16, in an Area Playoff matchup Friday in Dublin.

After making the playoffs for the first time since 1983 under head coach Jeb Dixon, Oglesby (10-2) battled back in the second half despite falling behind early. But Richland Springs (10-0) came up with late turnovers to secure the victory as the Coyotes seek their 10th state championship since 2004.
