MOVING TO THE TOP: FINAL POLL

With 2023 Texas high school football regular season coming to a close last weekend, here are the final Class 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A Top 10 rankings as qualifiers advance to the playoffs

With the final weekend of the 2023 Texas high school football regular season in the books, postseason qualifiers prepare for Bi-District playoff matchups under the Friday night lights throughout the Heart of Texas. But before the playoffs begin, let’s take a look at the state’s Final Top 10 polls for Class 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A.

With eight Heart of Texas teams — China Spring, Stephenville, Lorena, Tolar, Mart, Abbott, Jonesboro and Oglesby — remain steadfast in their positions among the state’s elite heading into their respective postseason tournaments, while undefeated Axtell finally broke into the Top 10 poll.

The Stephenville Yellowjackets (4-0, 8-2) moved up a notch to No. 5 by getting past Waco La Vega, 23-14, and knocking the Pirates out of the poll, while the defending state champion China Spring Cougars (3-1, 7-3) jumped two spots to No. 7 in the Class 4A, Division I state rankings while having an open week with a playoff berth clinched.

Without representation in the Class 4A, DII Top 10 rankings, the Heart of Texas boast six teams in the smaller two classifications, while the Lorena Leopards (4-0, 6-2) held firm to the No. 7 spot in the Class 3A, DI poll while remaining idle. But Whitney Wildcats (7-1, 9-1) and the Grandview Zebras (8-0, 9-1) both remained unranked in the Class 3A, DII poll.

With a strong presence in the Class 2A polls, the undefeated Axtell Longhorns (6-0, 10-0) finally emerged at No. 10 among top teams in the Heart of Texas from Class 2A, DI. In the meantime, the third-ranked Tolar Rattlers (6-0, 9-1) just keep on winning, crushing San Saba, 63-0, while the perennial powerhouse Mart Panthers (6-0, 10-0) remained undefeated and held on to second in Class 2A, DII by smashing District 10-2A, DII cellar dweller Hubbard, 73-6.

In six-man football, the Abbott Panthers (5-0, 10-0) held at No. 3 by easily disposing of another district challenger Gholson, 46-0, while the Jonesboro Eagles (4-0, 9-1) stayed at No. 5 with by crushing Evant, 62-6. The Oglesby Tigers (2-0, 9-0) held as the second-ranked team in Class 1A, DII with a 62-0 district shutout win over Buckholts.
