in Volleyball

CLIFTON – After opening the regular season at Hillsboro Tuesday, the Clifton Lady Cub volleyball team will host the annual Clifton Volleyball Tournament this Thursday and Saturday.

Against Hillsboro, the Lady Cubs (0-1) lost in a fifth-set tiebreaker, 10-25, 26-24, 25-23, 16-25, 9-15.

“We were exposed to a good offense to put our defense to the test,” Clifton volleyball’s first-year head coach Paige Poth said. “We lost in the first set, but bounced back after adjusting our offense in set two and three, winning them both.

“We just have to learn to close and finish the game. We have the resiliency. It’s small things that we just have to put all together. Our defense can only get better from here.”

The Clifton Tournament will begin with pool play on Thursday to determine Saturday’s championship bracket seeding. Clifton will be in Pool A with Moody, Waco Reicher and Dublin, while Pool B will consist of Hamilton, Valley Mills, Hico and Tolar.

In pool play Thursday, Clifton will face Moody at 9 a.m., then take on Dublin and Reicher in back-to-back matches at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.

By hosting a three-team scrimmage last Saturday, the Clifton Lady Cubs served into the 2019 Texas high school volleyball season under the direction of Paige Poth.
