BATTLING BRAWN: Lady Cubs building momentum in non-district

CLIFTON – Coming off a strong showing at the Dublin Tournament last weekend, the Clifton Lady Cub volleyball team will play host to the Marlin Lady Bulldogs today, beginning with the Junior Varsity at 5 p.m. followed by the Varsity at 6 p.m.

The Lady Cubs (9-11) captured second place in the Challenger’s Bracket after placing third in the pool play on Thursday, winning three of five matchups.

“We had a tough pool on Thursday,” Clifton volleyball’s first-year head coach Paige Poth said. “Saturday, we came out and played amazing.”

Clifton swept through Albany Saturday morning before doing the same to Venus. But in the Challenger’s Bracket title game, Albany turned the tables on the Lady Cubs.

“Our first two matches against Venus and Hawley were great,” Poth said. “The girls were fired up. We ran the best offense I have seen us run all season, but also the best defense against Hawley.

“In the final match against Albany, we fought, but couldn’t get a run on points very often. Errors got the best of us. But we battled, and I was proud of the way the girls battled and pushed through every point.”

With two more weeks to prepare for the challenge, Clifton will open District 17-3A competition Sept. 13 by hosting Harmony Science Academy. The power-packed district includes, West (20-4), Whitney (17-9), Maypearl (11-5), Grandview (11-5), Rio Vista and Keene.
