CHALLENGE READY: Lady Cubs ride winning streak into tough district

in Volleyball

CLIFTON – Riding a four-game winning streak, the Clifton Lady Cub volleyball team will open District 17-3A play by hosting Harmony Science Academy at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

“I made the comment to the girls about everyday being our best day, and each game we get better,” Clifton volleyball first-year head coach Paige Poth said. “They took that and ran with it. Each game, I do see the things we work hard on during practice, and we do get better every day in some aspect of the game.

” I feel great about our team at this point. We are coming in everyday with a mindset that adversity doesn’t stop us, we will get better every day. And it shows in games and in practice.”

Before taking a week off, the Lady Cubs swept past the Class 4A Lampasas Lady Badgers in straight sets, 3-0, on the road to wrap up their non-district schedule last Friday. Clifton (13-12) has now won sixth of its last seven matches.

“We had a hard time scoring in the first set,” Poth said. “Lampasas put up some good defense, and we struggled to put the ball down and score. The next games, we came out and adjusted our offense and really pushed through to come out with a win. I was very proud of their fight to finish.”

The Lady Cubs will have their hands full in the power-packed district, which includes Class 3A’s 11th-ranked Maypearl (21-6), 15th-ranked West (23-4), Whitney (20-9), Grandview (13-6), Rio Vista (10-8) and Keene.

“I honestly believe that the district will be a fight to the finish,” Poth said. “I think every team will match up and put up a good fight. I think with our preseason and the competition we have faced this far has prepared us for our district, and we will do great things this season.

“Our focus right now is making the playoffs. And we have to keep the mentality that the next game, whoever our opponent is, is the most important game.”
