WINNING WAYS: Cubs capture Hamilton tournament title

December 17, 2019

HAMILTON – Playing in the Hamilton Tournament last weekend, the Clifton Cub boys basketball team extended its winning streak to seven straight and swept to the tournament championship as senior TJ Ferch drew the tourney’s Most Valuble Player award.

Clifton (9-1) opened the tournament with an overwhelming 67-12 victory over Bangs last Thursday as the Cubs jumped out to a commanding 22-3 first quarter lead and never looked back. Sophomore Seth Payne led Clifton with 13 points, followed by Ferch with 12, along with junior Luis Rodriguez and sophomore Griffin Phillips with 10 apiece.

Led by Ferch with 25 points and Payne with 22, the Cubs used another fast start to knock off Comanche, 67-46, on Friday. Clifton outscored Comanche, 20-6, in the first quarter to build an advantage the Cubs never surrendered as Phillips also scored in double figures with 10 points.

In the championship game Saturday, the Cubs kept constant pressure on host Hamilton to win all four periods on their way to a convincing 58-35 victory. Payne led the Cubs in scoring with 15 points, followed by Phillips with 14 and Ferch with 12.

Clifton hosts Troy today at 6 p.m, as well as Hillsboro this Friday at 4:15 p.m. before taking seven days off for the Christmas break. The Cubs will resume play Dec. 27 in the Troy Christmas Tournament.
