MAKING THE TURN: Cubs wrap up first round of district tonight

CLIFTON – Wrapping up the first round of District 17-3A competition, the Clifton Cub boys basketball team will host Waco’s Harmony School of Innovation today at 7 p.m. in the Clifton High School Gymnasium.

Despite struggling to overcome key injuries in the first round of district, the Cubs (2-4 in district, 14-8 overall) can position themselves to make a run at their first postseason berth in 14 years with a win over Harmony School of Innovation (0-6, 0-8) tonight.

Taking on third place Whitney Tuesday night, the Cubs fell just short with a heartbreaking 44-39 loss to the Wildcats (4-2, 8-10). Senior TJ Ferch led Clifton with 13 points and 10 rebounds, followed by sophomore Griffin Phillips with eight points, eight boards and three assists.

In other District 17-3A action Tuesday night, first place Grandview crushed Harmony School of Innovation, 106-8, in Waco, Maypearl defeated Rio Vista, 62-48, West rolled past Keene, 73-42.

Friday’s district matchups include Grandview (6-0, 14-12) at West (3-3, 13-10), Keene (3-3, 9-9) hosting Rio Vista (1-5, 7-15), and Whitney (4-2, 8-10) visiting Maypearl (5-1, 12-7).
