SNAPPING OUT OF IT: Lady Cubs take on playoff-bound Maypearl in finale

February 11, 2020

CLIFTON — Playing with nothing but pride on the line, the Clifton girls basketball team rose to the occasion to dominate Rio Vista, 59-30, to snap a four-game road losing streak in District 17-3A action last Friday night.

The Lady Cubs jumped out to a commanding 17-5 first quarter lead, then poured in 17 more points in the third quarter to put the game away.

Senior Kamryn Kettler finished with a game-high 20 points and a team-high 11 rebounds, followed by senior Daniella Gaona with 11, and senior Sutton Finney with eight points, four assists and five steals, while senior Dacey Dietiker pulled down 11 boards and grabbed five steals.

“The girls have shown growth throughout this season,” Clifton girls basketball head coach Whitney Holdbrook said. “That is no different here at the end of the season. They came into practice focused to improve and develop a game plan for our last opponent, Maypearl. This is a hard working group that gives it their best every day.”

In other District 17-3A action last Friday night, state-ranked Grandview slipped past second place Maypearl, 38-36, to claim the district crown, Whitney knocked off Keene, 52-33, and West moved into a tie for second place by rolling past Waco Harmony School of Innovation.

Tuesday’s district finale matchups include the Lady Cubs (5-8 in district, 14-18 overall) hosting Maypearl (10-3, 23-7) at 6:15 p.m., fourth place Whitney (9-4, 26-7) visiting seventh-ranked Grandview (12-1, 28-4), Rio Vista (2-11, 3-16) traveling to West (10-3, 25-7), and Waco Harmony School of Innovation (0-13, 1-14) at Keene (4-9, 9-13).
