RETURN TRIP: Morgan girls defeat Covington, earn postseason berth

February 13, 2020

MORGAN – On the strength of a third place finish in District 25-1A, the Morgan girls basketball team advances to the postseason to take on District 26-1A runner-up Oglesby Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the Hamilton High School gymnasium.

Last Friday, the Lady Eagles (7-5) eliminated Covington, 56-47, to secure the playoff berth for the first time since 2017 before wrapping up the regular season with a one-point loss at Aquilla Tuesday. Against Covington, junior Mia Garcia led Morgan with 23 points, followed by sophomore Nia Aviles with 11.

“Friday night was a big win for the Lady Eagles of Morgan,” Morgan girls basketball head coach Juan Ramirez said. “It’s been a few years since we have been in the playoffs. This year’s team has shown the ability to play hard and show up night after night. Couldn’t be more proud of what our girls have accomplished.”

Iredell (11-1) won the district title, followed by runner-up Blum (10-2) and fourth place Aquilla (6-6).

The Lady Eagles put themselves in position to secure a spot in the postseason tournament with an overwhelming 52-21 victory over Kopperl. Aviles led Morgan with 19 points, followed by Garcia with 17.

“It was our top priority to play hard and come out focused,” Ramirez said. “We were able to jump out to a quick lead and were able to sustain our strong play for the better part of four quarters.”
