PUTTING IT ON THE LINE: Focusing on the NFL Conference Championship games before attention turns to unprecedented college football spring season
Just when we thought football season was almost over, it’s about to start all over again. As Super Bowl LV closes out the traditional fall football season for the high school, college and professional levels, the spring football season will begin for many FCS and NCAA Division III programs.
But for now, THE SPORTS BUZZ Gridiron Gurus will focus on the National Football League playoffs as the field has been narrowed to four teams standing in the NFC and AFC conference championship games this week.
This season, THE SPORTS BUZZ Gridiron Gurus pick’ems panel consists of newcomer Don Nicholas, Field Representative for U.S. Congressman Roger Williams (TX-25), while Meridian Yellowjacket football head coach Wade Morton, The Sports Buzz photographer David Harding and The Sports Buzz’ Brett Voss return from last year.
In the NFL playoffs, the top two seeds advanced to the AFC championship game as defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City held off the Cleveland Browns, 22-17, and the Buffalo Bills eliminated the Baltimore Ravens, 17-3. But in the NFC, Tom Brady led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to an upset 30-20 win over New Orleans in what could prove to be the last game for Drew Brees, while the top-seeded Green Bay Packers rolled over the Los Angeles Rams, 32-18.
For the record, Brett pulled even with overall pick’ems leader Wade with a near-perfect week, only missing on Tampa Bay’s upset victory over New Orleans and exclusively picking Denton Ryan’s Class 5A, Division I state championship win over Cedar Park. And with both Gridiron Gurus picking Green Bay and Buffalo to advance to the Super Bowl, nothing will change this week.
With that said, David and Don both bested Wade last week as well, and they hope to pick up more ground by selecting Kansas City to make back-to-back trips to the Super Bowl.
Join us every Thursday throughout the 2021 spring football season as THE SPORTS BUZZ Gridiron Gurus pick their winners for the unprecedented spring football games, as well as the NFL playoffs through Super Bowl LV.
Be sure to make your picks as well!
