PUTTING IT ON THE LINE: Tarleton State looking for first home win hosting Mississippi State; Division III features Texas Lutheran at Hardin-Simmons classic

With weather conditions turning mildly spring-like across the state of Texas as the threat of COVID-19 appears to be subsiding, the unprecedented college spring football season offers a full slate of games in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) and NCAA Division III.

After suffering a disappointing 26-14 loss FCS Independent rival Dixie State (1-0) last week, the Tarleton State Texans (1-2) hope to rebound in their first-ever meeting against Mississippi College (0-0) at 2 p.m. Saturday in Stephenville’s Memorial Stadium.

In an NCAA Division III showdown between the two undefeated teams in the American Southwest Conference West, Hardin-Simmons (1-0) hosts Texas Lutheran (2-0) in its home opener Saturday coming off an impressive 49-7 season-opening victory over McMurry. Texas Lutheran has won back-to-back games against Sul Ross State, 24-3, and Howard Payne, 39-38.

Throughout the spring, THE SPORTS BUZZ Gridiron Gurus prognosticators will select NCAA FCS and Division III college football games featuring Texas teams.

Other FCS games feature Texas Southern visits Prairie View A&M; Lamar (0-1) hosts Incarnate Word (1-0); Nicholls State (2-0) travels to Northwestern State; and Jackson State (1-0) invades Grambling State. In DIII, Mary Hardin-Baylor (2-0) looks to remain undefeated at East Texas Baptist (2-1); Millsaps visits Austin College, and Howard Payne (0-1) travels Sul Ross State (0-2).

This season, THE SPORTS BUZZ Gridiron Gurus pick’ems panel consists of newcomer Don Nicholas, Field Representative for U.S. Congressman Roger Williams (TX-25), while Meridian Yellowjacket football head coach Wade Morton, The Sports Buzz photographer David Harding and The Sports Buzz’ Brett Voss return from last year.
