2022 The Sports Buzz Game of the Week
Week 4: McGREGOR BULLDOGS 44, CLIFTON CUBS 21

THE SPORTS BUZZ Game Of The Week featured the Class 3A, Division I’s McGregor Bulldogs running past the Class 3A, DII’s Clifton Cubs, 44-21, in a non-district matchup Friday night at Clifton’s Cub Stadium.

Sophomore running back Sebastian Torres rushed for 235 yards and three touchdowns and caught a pass for another score to lead the Bulldogs (1-3) to their first win of the season. McGregor ran for 340 yards on 30 carries while junior Daytron Owens added another rushing touchdown.

In the losing effort, junior fullback Riley Finney ran for 98 yards and two touchdowns while junior running back Parker Tunnell added 73 yards and another score. Senior quarterback completed 11 of 19 passes for 141 yards, connecting with junior wide receiver Andres Devora four times for 72 yards.

Week 3: BOSQUEVILLE BULLDOGS 21, CLIFTON CUBS 7

THE SPORTS BUZZ Game Of The Week featured the Class 2A, DI Bosqueville Bulldogs hung on in a hard-fought game against the Class 3A, DII Clifton Cubs for a 21-7 victory Friday night in Cub Stadium.

Playing the perennial Heart of Texas powerhouse, the Cubs (1-2) went toe-to-toe with Bosqueville (1-2) despite trailing 19-0 in the fourth quarter. Clifton senior quarterback Trent Guinn connected with junior wide receiver Andres Devora for two big plays through the air, the last one a 27-yard scoring strike to make it a two-score game with 5:34 remaining.

But for the most part, the Bulldogs bottled up the Clifton running game, limiting the Cubs to only 101 rushing yards and 3.4 yards per carry. Providing a balanced attack, Newt Schornack led Bosqueville with 183 passing yards and two touchdowns and running for another score.

Week 2: MORGAN EAGLES 68, GUSTINE 22

THE SPORTS BUZZ Game Of The Week featured the Class 1A, Division II’s Morgan Eagles soaring past the Gustine Tigers, 68-22, Friday night in a non-district matchup at Morgan’s John Bryant Field.

After losing their season opener to Lingleville, the Eagles (1-1) started fast and closed out strong to bury the Tigers (0-2) by virtue of the 45-point mercy rule with only 6.5 seconds remaining on the clock. Senior Adrian Vera-Rico ran for four touchdowns and sophomore AJ Aviles scrambled for three scores to lead Morgan.

Week 1: CLIFTON CUBS 20, MERKEL BEARCATS 12

THE SPORTS BUZZ Game of the Week featured the Class 3A, Division II Clifton Cubs holding off the Merkel Badgers, 20-12, in a non-district 2022 season opening neutral site matchup Thursday night at Cisco’s Chesley Field.

After jumping out to an early 12-0 lead, the Cubs (1-0) held off a Merkel rally in the fourth quarter before grinding out the clock with their Wing-T ground game.
