CLIFTON – Coming off a fourth place finish in the annual Clifton Volleyball Tournament last Thursday and Saturday, the Clifton Lady Cubs volleyball team knocked off Covington in straight sets, 3-0, Tuesday evening.
“The leadership is coming together,” said Clifton volleyball first-year head coach Paige Poth. “I was very proud of the girls for their fight and determination to win, even though we fell into holes where we gave up too many points.”
After placing second in Pool A on Thursday by winning two out of three matchups in the tournament, the Lady Cubs (3-4) faced Dublin in the third place game on Saturday. Dublin navigated through Pool A undefeated before knocking off Clifton for the second time in a three-set thriller, 25-21, 23-25, 25-18.
The Lady Cubs opened the tournament by beating Moody in straight sets, 25-10, 25-21, on Thursday. Then after losing to Dublin, 25-23, 25-18, Clifton rebounded to win a hard-fought battle with Waco Reicher Catholic Academy, 24-26, 25-21, 25-21.
“I was very impressed with the way we played,” said Poth. “We had a few times when we gave up more points than we should have, but we always bounced back and recovered. We had good competition, and we fought hard.
“Our defense is improving every step of the way. Every day, we improve. We have a lot of small things to take care of. But each week and each game, it comes together a little better.”
