JUMP START: Lady Jackets looking for first district win against Santo

January 14, 2020

MERIDIAN — Coming off a hard-fought 46-38 loss to Class 2A’s 14th-ranked Hico Lady Tigers, the Meridian Lady Jacket girls basketball team will be looking for its first District 10-2A victory when the Lady Jackets host the 25th-ranked Santo Lady Wildcats today at 6:15 p.m. in Yellowjacket Gymnasium.

Last Friday night, Hico (1-0 in district, 19-3 overall) jumped out to an early 18-8 lead in the first quarter, but Lady Jackets settled down in the second period. Meridian (0-1, 14-9) began to chip away at the lead in the third, but the Lady Tigers nullified the rally in the final period to secure the win.

“The Lady Jackets lost a tough one in Hico,” Meridian girls basketball head coach Jill Kendall said. “We outplayed them in the second half, but got off to a slow start in the first quarter. I’m so very proud of how they all stepped up and played through a tough situation.”

Senior Dakota Cassidy led the Lady Jackets with 12 points, followed by senior Reese Errington with 11, five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Senior Jalen Clifton pulled down five boards and grabbed a team-high four steals while tossing in four points.

In other District 10-2A action last Friday night, Goldthwaite knocked off DeLeon, 46-28, while Santo (0-0, 15-8) remained idle. Friday’s matchups include Hico at Deleon (0-1, 6-7), while 22nd-ranked Goldthwaite (1-0, 20-4) gets an open date.
