FIGHTING FOR LIFE: Cubs facing second place Whitney

WHITNEY – Fighting to stay in the District 17-3A playoff chase, the Clifton Cub boys basketball team will travel to Whitney today to take on the second place Wildcats (4-1, 8-9) at 7:30 p.m.

Facing the district’s other second place team last Friday night, the Cubs (2-3 in district, 14-7 overall) suffered a hard fought 61-51 loss to Maypearl (4-1, 11-7) at the Clifton High Gymnasium, putting Clifton in an uphill fight to earn a playoff berth for the first time in 14 years.

Sophomore Seth Payne led the Cubs with 26 points and three assists, followed by junior Luis Rodriguez with eight points and senior Everett Sadler with seven. Senior TJ Ferch pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.

In other District 17-3A action Friday night, Grandview crushed Whitney, 74-36 in the showdown for first place, West edged Rio Vista, 57-54, while Keene defeated Harmony School of Innovation in Waco.

Tuesday’s district matchups include first place Grandview (5-0, 13-12) visiting Harmony School of Innovation (0-5, 0-7) in Waco, Maypearl  hosting Rio Vista (1-4, 7-14), and Keene (3-2, 9-8) at West (2-3, 12-10).
