in Girls Basketball

MERIDIAN – Wrapping up the first round of District 10-2A competition last week with two more losses, the Meridian girls basketball team will be looking for its first district victory when the Lady Jackets (0-4, 14-12) open the second round by hosting Hico (1-3, 19-6) today at 6 p.m. in Yellowjacket Gymnasium.

After a disappointing 56-33 road loss to DeLeon last Tuesday, the Lady Jackets returned home to deliver a strong performance against 17th-ranked Goldthwaite before falling short, 60-41, last Friday night.

“The Lady Jackets did not have a good night against DeLeon,” Meridian girls basketball head coach Jill Kendall said. “But against Goldthwaite, the Lady Jackets came out and had a great first quarter playing to within two points. Everyone hustled and played with intensity the whole game. I was very proud of their effort.”

Senior Reese Errington led Meridian against DeLeon with 12 points, followed by senior Jalen Clifton with eight and senior Dakota Cassidy with seven points and a team-high seven rebounds. Junior Norah Lira dished out five assists, while senior Jada Crawford came up with five steals.

Against Goldthwaite, Errington poured in a team-high 16 points and six rebounds, followed by Cassidy with nine points and four steals.

In other District 10-2A action last Friday night, district leading Santo knocked off previously state-ranked Hico, 36-19, while DeLeon remained idle. Tuesday’s matchups feature 17th-ranked Goldthwaite (3-1, 22-5) at DeLeon (2-2, 13-13), while 20th-ranked Santo (4-0, 19-8) draws an open date.
