THRILL OF VICTORY: Jackets grab first district win in dramatic fashion

January 30, 2020

MERIDIAN – In dramatic fashion, the Meridian boys basketball team found a way to earn its first District 10-2A win of the season as the Yellowjackets held off a late rally to slip by the Hico Tigers, 46-43, Tuesday night in Yellowjacket Gymnasium.

Led by senior Demarius Parks with 15 points and 13 rebounds, Meridian clung to a 37-31 lead going into the final period. The Tigers clawed at the deficit, but the Jackets rose to the challenge to preserve the victory.

Junior Dylan Poole added 10 points, while seniors Matt Rosas and Zade Kendall tossed in eight each. Rosas finished with team highs in rebounds (14), assists (8) and steals (4).

“Great win for us,” Meridian boys basketball head coach Carlos Johansson said. “We didn’t have our best shooting night, but we persevered and came out with the win. Now, it’s back to work.”

The Jackets (1-2 in district, 9-16 overall) will wrap up the first round of district when they travel to Santo to take on the Wildcats (1-2, 10-16) Friday at 7 p.m.

In other District 10-2A action Tuesday night, Goldthwaite remained undefeated in district by easing past DeLeon, 56-41, while Santo had an open date. Friday’s other matchups feature Hico (0-3, 10-15) faces second place DeLeon (2-1, 13-14), while Goldthwaite (4-0, 17-10) draws an open date.
