WEEK 8: District races begin to take shape in Class 1A six-man football as Covid-19 and injuries continue to take their toll across the Heart of Texas

Consisting of four and five-team districts, the Class 1A six-man football battles for postseason berths have basically just begun. But with three weeks remaining in the season, some teams are just trying to survive and still be standing to complete the regular season.

Coming off its first loss of the season in the final non-district game on the schedule, Jonesboro Eagles rebounded for a resounding 78-31 district opening victory over the previously undefeated Evant Elks last Friday night in District 15-1A, DI.

After taking their lumps in non-district games, the defending state champion Blum Bobcats opened District 11-1A, DI competition with a hard-fought 24-16 victory over the Covington Owls, while Avalon handed the Bynum Bulldogs a 53-8 loss.

In Class 1A, DII action, the frontrunning Oglesby Tigers will open District 14-1A, DII action this week coming off a 46-34 victory over Waco Vanguard, while the Sidney Eagles emerged as the early favorite in District 15-1A, DII with an exciting 37-30 win over the Rising Star Wildcats last Friday night.

Although the 16th-ranked Morgan Eagles and the surprising 25th-ranked Walnut Springs Hornets have established themselves legitimate postseason threats in District 12-1A, DII, the Iredell Dragons were forced to shut down their season due to injuries after battling Covid-19 since the 2020 campaign began.

Since the Kopperl Eagles cancelled their season from the start due to Covid-19 concerns, only three teams in the all-Bosque County league are left standing as Morgan rolled to a dominating 52-6 victory over the Cranfills Gap Lions last Friday night.
