Class 3A, DI defending state champion Grandview ousted, Lorena eliminated leaving the Heart of Texas region empty-handed in Class 3A postseason

THE SPORTS BUZZ Gridiron Matchups presents the Class 3A football State Quarterfinal playoff matchups from across the state of Texas. With only two teams surviving into the third round of the Class 3A postseason, the last of the Heart of Texas hopefuls were eliminated in the Regional Playoffs last week.

Denied a shot at their third straight Class 3A, Division I state championship, the second-ranked Grandview Zebras (11-1) were knocked out by fourth-ranked Malakoff (10-2) in a 24-21 thriller at Waco ISD Stadium last Friday night. In a rematch of the 2018 Class 3A DI state championship game, the Zebras were unable to repeat their 2020 season opening 31-24 overtime victory over Malakoff.

In a Class 3A, DI Region III playoff matchup, the Lorena Leopards (9-3) failed to take advantage of moving down from Class 4A, DII this season, stumbling to Hallettsville (11-2), 61-48, in a high-scoring shootout last Friday night in Wimberley’s Texan Stadium.

Grabbing the spotlight in the Class 3A, DII postseason bracket, all four District 13-3A, DII playoff qualifiers advanced to the Region IV semifinals to set up rematches. And as expected, the favorites prevailed by repeating their regular season wins.

The district champion and sixth-ranked Franklin Lions (10-2) ripped through the Lexington Eagles (8-4) last Friday night in Brenham’s Cub Stadium, while the runner-up Buffalo Bison (12-1) survived a wild ride to take down the Rogers Eagles (7-6), 37-35, at Waco ISD Stadium.

In the State Quarterfinals, Buffalo gets a rematch with Franklin at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Waco ISD Stadium. Earlier in the season, the Bison lost the district championship showdown, 69-30, for their only loss in 2020.
