Going into the final weekend of the regular season for the Heart of Texas Class 3A, 2A & 1A teams, key showdowns on tap under the Friday night lights this week
As the 2021 Texas high school football season heads into the final week of the regular season, the Class 3A, 2A and 1A district races across the Heart of Texas offer some crucial matchups on the schedule.
In the first of two THE SPORTS BUZZ Games of the Week, the spotlight remains on six-man football Thursday night as the Battle for the Bosque features the defending District 12-1A, Division II champion Morgan Eagles (2-1 in district, 2-5 overall) host the 2020 district runnerup Walnut Springs Hornets (2-1, 4-5) in a winner-take-all battle for second place and a playoff berth while the 23rd-ranked Cranfills Gap Lions (3-0, 6-3) host the rejuvenated Iredell Dragons (1-2, 3-4) with their second district title in the last three seasons already secured.
Under the Friday night lights, THE SPORTS BUZZ Game of the Week will feature the Clifton Cubs (1-4, 1-8) trying to stay in a four-team mix for the fourth place postseason spot in District 13-3A, DII when they host the third place Lexington Eagles (3-2, 5-4) at 7:30 p.m. at Cub Stadium. The Cubs need to defeat Lexington and Buffalo (1-4, 2-7) needs to knock off the Riesel Indians (2-3, 4-4) to potentially create a four-way tie for fourth place.
In other Heart of Texas Class 3A action, the Dublin Lions (3-1, 7-2) will host the Eastland Mavericks (3-1, 4-5) in a battle for at least a share of the District 5-3A, DII title, while DI’s sixth-ranked West Trojans (5-0, 9-0) hopes to claim the District 7-3A, DI championship outright when they host the playoff-bound Maypearl Panthers (3-2, 5-3).
In Class 2A matchups, DI’s fourth-ranked Crawford Pirates (5-0, 9-0) attempt to end the regular season undefeated as the outright District 7-2A, DI champions when they host the Valley Mills Eagles (2-3, 4-5), while DII’s top-ranked Mart Panthers (4-0, 9-0) tries to do the same when facing the plyoff-bound Wortham Bulldogs (2-2, 5-4) on the road.
In other Heart of Texas six-man action, the resurgent Blum Bobcats (3-0, 4-5) hosts the Avalon Eagles (3-0, 6-3) in a battle for the District, 11-1A, DI crown, the Lingleville Cardinals (2-1, 6-3) will try to steal the District 13-1A, DI title from the top-ranked May Tigers (3-0, 9-0), while the Coolidge Yellow Jackets (1-1, 5-4) hit the road to visit the Aquilla Cougars (1-1, 4-4) in a battle for second place and a playoff berth in District 12-1A, DI.
