COLLEGE FOOTBALL HIGHLIGHTS: Week 3

September 18, 2022

Nationally-ranked Baylor Bears, Texas Longhorns and Texas A&M Aggies rebound from tough losses to post impressive wins Saturday

Just when it looked like all might be lost for the three nationally-ranked Lone Star state college football teams, 17th-ranked Baylor, 21st-ranked Texas and 24th-ranked Texas A&M rebounded from disappointing losses.

Coming off a miserable loss to unranked Appalachian State last week, the Aggies made the biggest statement about not being counted out by knocking off 13th-ranked Miami. And just when everyone decided the Longhorns would struggle without injured quarterback Quinn Ewers, running back Bijan Robinson stepped up to put the offense on his back.

No. 24 TEXAS A&M Aggies 17, No. 13 MIAMI Hurricanes 9

Coming off the bench for his first start, LSU transfer quarterback Max Johnson led the 24th-ranked Texas A&M Aggies to a surprising 17-9 victory over the 13th-ranked Miami Hurricanes Saturday night in front of 107,245 at Kyle Field in College Station.

Replacing quarterback Haynes King after a disastrous loss to Appalachian State last week, Johnson threw for 140 yards and a touchdown, while running back Devon Achane rushed for 88 yards and caught four passes for 42 yards and a touchdown to lead Texas A&M (2-1).

The Hurricanes (2-1), who scored 100 points combined in their first two games, rolled up 392 yards of total offense to outgain the Aggies (264). But Miami could not convert in the red zone, settling for field goals as they lost for the first time under new coach Mario Cristobal.

No. 21 TEXAS Longhorns 41, UTSA Roadrunners 20

Junior running back Bijan Robinson ran for 183 yards and three touchdowns as the 21st-ranked Texas Longhorns beat the UTSA Roadrunners, 41-20, Saturday night before 102,520 at Darrell K Royal Memorial Stadium in Austin.

Trailing 17-7 in the second quarter, the Longhorns (2-1) rallied to tie the game at intermission before Texas began to take control with Robinson’s electrifying 78-yard touchdown run. Filling in for injured quarterback Quinn Ewers, Hudson Card threw for 161 yards and contributed a key 32-yard run in the fourth quarter. The Longhorns wore down UTSA with its running game, piling up 298 yards rushing.

Looking for the biggest win for a program only playing football since 2011, the Roadrunners (1-2) shocked Texas with a surprise onside kick followed by a trick play touchdown pass to jump out to an early 10-point lead before the Longhorns rallied.
