NFL PLAYS IN REVIEW: Week 4

October 5, 2023

Bouncing back with dominant win over Patriots, the Dallas Cowboys deal Belichick worst career loss, while the Texans win second straight by pounding Steelers; check out highlights and Week 5 previews for Cowboys & Texans

Bouncing back from a humiliating loss, the Dallas Cowboys handed future all of fame head coach Bill Belichick his worst career loss by dominating the New England Patriots last Sunday. The overwhelming win set up this week’s showcase clash when the Cowboys visit the undefeated San Francisco 49ers on Sunday Night Football.

Winning their second straight game, the Houston Texans appear to be growing up fast behind rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud. And in the process, Stroud has gotten off to one of the best starts for a rookie quarterback in NFL history

Across the NFL, the defending NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles (4-0) remained one of only two undefeated teams in the league by edging the Washington Commanders (2-2), while the New York Giants (1-3) might be on the verge of going down for the count.

WEEK 5 RECAPS:

at DALLAS Cowboys 38, NEW ENGLAND Patriots 3

With the newest version of the Doomsday Defense dominating, DaRon Bland returned one of his two interceptions for a touchdown, Leighton Vander Esch scooped up a fumble for a score and the Dallas Cowboys blew out the New England Patriots 38-3 on Sunday at AT&T Stadium.

As the Cowboys (3-1) handing Patriot head coach Bill Belichick his worst loss in 29 seasons as a head coach, 24 of them in New England, quarterback Mac Jones was responsible for all three turnovers, leaving the six-time Super Bowl winner waiting at least another week to join George Halas and Don Shula as the only NFL coaches with 300 career regular-season victories.

The Cowboys also spoiled former star running back Ezekiel Elliott’s Dallas homecoming with their 10th consecutive home victory – the longest home streak since 1991-92. The Patriots (1-3) trailed by just seven early in the second quarter when Jones was sacked from behind by Dante Fowler, leading to the easy 11-yard scoop-and-score from Vander Esch.

Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott threw his first touchdown to a receiver this season by connecting with CeeDee Lamb on a 20-yard scoring strike in the first quarter for a 10-3 lead. Prescott completed 28 of 34 passes for 261 yards without an interception as all three Dallas victories have been blowouts with an average margin of 32 points. The Cowboys were coming off a surprising loss at Arizona in which they never led.

Rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud threw for 306 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Houston Texans to their second straight win with a 30-6 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.

Stroud has thrown for 1,212 yards through his first four games in NFL history, the second-most yards by a rookie behind only Cam Newton, who had 1,386 in his first four games for Carolina in 2011.

Houston’s 24-point win marked its largest margin of victory since a 57-14 win over Tennessee on Oct. 1, 2017.

Stroud, the second overall pick in the draft, continued his strong start, tossing a touchdown pass to get things going in a first half where the Texans built a 16-0 lead. With his second 300-yard passing game, Stroud has thrown six touchdown passes and set an NFL rookie record with 151 pass attempts without an interception – the first rookie since the merger with 250 yards, two touchdown passes and no interceptions in three straight games.
