COLLEGE GAME DAY RECAP: Week 5

in Pro/College/HighSchool

Setting up the biggest Red River Showdown in recent memory, the third-ranked Texas Longhorns crush 24th-ranked Kansas, Texas A&M shreds the Razorbacks, Baylor posts remarkable comeback

Not looking ahead to the big showdown in the Red River Rivalry, the third-ranked Texas Longhorns dominated the 24th-ranked Kansas Jayhawks to begin drawing votes as the best college football team in the nation.

In other Texas major college action, the Texas A&M Aggies continued to work toward earning a spot in the national rankings by taking care of the Arkansas Razorbacks, 34-22, while the Baylor Bears slipped past the Central Florida Knights with the biggest comeback in school history, and West Virginia Mountaineers shocked the Texas Christian Horned Frogs.

No. 3 TEXAS Longhorns 40, No. 24 KANSAS Jayhawks 14

Running back Jonathan Brooks ran for 218 yards and two touchdowns as the third-ranked Texas Longhorns ran past the previously undefeated and No. 24 Kansas Jayhawks, 40-14, last Saturday at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin

Setting up the Red River Rivalry against Oklahoma next weekend, Texas (2-0 in Big 12, 5-0 overall) walked away with a win over a Top 25 team in dominating fashion with 661 yards of total offense while limiting the Jayhawks (1-1, 4-1) to 260 yards.

While the Longhorns rushed for 334 yards, quarterback Quinn Ewers added two touchdowns on the ground while completing 25 of 35 passes for 325 yards, connecting with Adonai Mitchell 10 times for 141 yards and a touchdown as Texas got off to its first 5-0 start since 2009.

TEXAS A&M Aggies 34, ARKANSAS Razorbacks 22

Texas A&M quarterback Max Johnson threw for 210 yards with two touchdowns and ran for 57 yards, but also had three second-half turnovers while the Aggies missed two field goals. But Texas A&M did enough right to knock off the Arkansas Razorbacks, 34-22, Saturday.

The Aggie defense came up with seven quarterback sacks and 15 tackles for loss for the second week in a row while limiting Arkansas to 174 total yards. Texas A&M (2-0 in SEC, 4-1 overall) got a defensive score on an interception return by linebacker Chris Russell Jr., and added a special teams score on Ainias Smith’s 82-yard punt return.

Arkansas (2-3, 0-2) failed to produce an offensive touchdown until KJ Jefferson’s 48-yard pass to Andrew Armstrong with 3:53 left. Cam Little kicked three field goals (52, 25 and 50 yards) for Arkansas, which has lost three in a row.

The Aggies won for the 11th time in 12 meetings since joining their former Southwest Conference rival in the Southeastern Conference in 2012, setting up a showdown with 12th-ranked Alabama, which lost in its last trip to College Station two years ago, 41-38, on a game-ending field goal.

BAYLOR Bears 36, CENTRAL FLORIDA Knights 35

Erased a 35-7 third-quarter deficit, the Baylor Bears stage a remarkable comeback to ruin Central Florida’s Big 12 Conference home debut, 36-35, last Saturday.

The Bears (1-1 in Big 12, 2-3 overall) scored 29 unanswered points and took the lead on a 25-yard field goal from Isaiah Hankins with 1:21 left to play to beat the Big 12 newcomer Knights (0-2, 3-2). The 28-point comeback marked the largest comeback in Baylor history and the largest comeback allowed in UCF history.

The Bears used two turnovers and four straight scoring drives to complete the improbable comeback, closing to 35-33 with just more than six minutes to play after Caden Jenkins scooped up a fumbled snap and raced 72 yards for a touchdown.

An uphill climb for the Bears throughout the game, UCF raced to a 21-0 lead and led 28-7 at the halftime. Baylor quarterback Blake Shapen, who returned from a three-game absence following an opening-week MCL injury, finished 21 for 34 and 293 yards with 105 yards in the second half, connecting with Monaray Baldwin seven times for 150 yards and a touchdown.

WEST VIRGINIA Mountaineers 24, TEXAS CHRISTIAN Horned Frogs 21

West Virginia ended TCU’s 10-game Big 12 regular-season winning streak with a 24-21 victory on Saturday night in Fort Worth.

The Mountaineers (2-0 in Big 12, 4-1 overall) secured their first 2-0 start in the Big 12 since 2018 by rallying from an emotional scene of teammate Aubrey Burks getting taken off on a cart after having his neck immobilized.

West Virginia trailed 14-7 when Burks went down in the second quarter and was behind 21-14 at halftime before scoring the only 10 points after the break and holding on with the two late blocks.

Mike Lockhart had the first field goal attempt block of TCU’s Griffin Kell from 46 yards with 4:47 remaining, then Sean Martin blocked a 55-yard try with 32 seconds to go.

TCU (1-1, 3-2) lost a Big 12 regular-season game for the first time under second-year coach Sonny Dykes, and already has two losses after going undefeated in the regular season last year. The Horned Frogs lost the Big 12 championship game to Kansas State last season before making the College Football Playoff, beating Michigan in the semifinals and getting blown out by Georgia in the title game.
