COLLEGE FOOTBALL HIGHLIGHTS: Week 4

September 25, 2022

Nationally-ranked Baylor Bears and Texas A&M Aggies escape with thrilling victories while the Texas Longhorns let one get away in Lubbock

Legendary rocker Meat Loaf once belted, “Two Out Of Three Ain’t Bad.” While Texas Longhorn college football fans would certainly debate that conclusion, the State of Texas enjoyed two thrilling victories by nationally-ranked teams as the 17th-ranked Baylor Bears survived on the road against the Iowa State Cyclones, while the 23rd-ranked Texas A&M Aggies held off the 10th-ranked Arkansas Razorbacks Saturday.

No. 17 BAYLOR Bears 31, IOWA STATE Cyclones 24

Overcoming a difficult road environment, the 17th-ranked Baylor Bears clawed their way to a 31-24 victory over the Iowa State Cyclones Saturday in front of an enthusiastic crowd at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames, Iowa.

Taking control of the game in the third quarter, the Bears (1-0 in the Big 12, 3-1 overall) mounted a 10-play, 93-yards scoring march culminating with a 19-yard touchdown run by Richard Reese. Baylor quarterback Blake Shapen threw for 238 yards and three touchdowns, connecting with Gavin Holmes for a 38-yard scoring strike in the fourth quarter that proved to be the game-winner.

Having its 11-game home winning streak against Big 12 opponents snapped, Iowa State (0-1, 3-1) could not overcome two interceptions and an inability to establish the running game. But the Cyclones rallied late to score 10 points in the fourth quarter, but their onside kick attempt with 55 seconds remaining failed.

No. 23 TEXAS A&M Aggies 23, No. 10 ARKANSAS Razorbacks 21

After falling behind 14-0 in the first quarter, the 23rd-ranked Texas A&M Aggies scored 23 unanswered points on their way to a wild 23-21 win over the 10th-ranked Arkansas Razorbacks Saturday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

The play of the game came late in the first half when the Razorbacks (1-1 in SEC, 3-1 overall) own a first down at the Aggie three-yard line. Arkansas quarterback KJ Jefferson fumbled, Aggie Demani Richardson scooped it up and sprinted 82 yards for a touchdown for a dramatic swing in momentum.

Aggies running back Devon Achane ran for 159 and a touchdown, while quarterback Max Johnson completed 11 of 21 passes for 151 yards and a score, connecting with Evan Stewart for the strike.

Since the embarrassing loss to Appalachian State two weeks ago, Texas A&M (1-0, 3-1) has posted back-to-back victories over national ranked teams to continue its climb back up the poll. On the other hand, Arkansas came up short in winning its first two SEC games since 2006.

TEXAS TECH Red Raiders 37, No. 22 TEXAS Longhorns 34 (OT)

For the first time since 2008, the Texas Tech Red Raider defeated the 22nd-ranked Texas Longhorns on their home field as the Red Raiders capitalized on two Texas turnovers to post an improbable 37-34 victory in overtime Saturday at Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock.

In a dramatic finish, Longhorn quarterback Hudson Card needed only 21 second to move the Longhorns into field goal position to force overtime as Bert Auburn nailed a 48-yard field goal as time expired to tie the game at 34-34. But Texas running back Bijan Robinson fumbled on the first play of overtime, leading to Texas Tech placekicker Trey Wolff cashing in for a 20-yard chip shot for the game-winner.

As a result, Texas Tech (1-0 in the Big 12, 3-1 overall) beat the Longhorns (0-1, 2-2) in a Big 12 opener for the first time in six tries and ended a six-game home losing streak. The Red Raiders also defeated the previously-ranked Houston Cougars at home two weeks ago.

In the win, Red Raiders quarterback Donovan Smith threw for 331 yards and two touchdowns, Card completed 20 of 30 passes for 277 yards and two scores with an interception and Robinson rushed for 101 yards and two touchdowns.
