With the state’s Class 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A Top 10 rankings undergoing transformations, the 2023 Texas high school football season reaches the midway point
Reaching the midway point of the 2023 Texas high school football season, surprises and upsets proved to be the common theme throughout the Heart of Texas. As a result, the state’s Top 10 polls for Class 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A underwent some transformations.
After spending a week on the outside looking in, Stephenville earned their way back into the Top 10 polls, China Spring, Tolar, Mart, Abbott, Jonesboro, Aquilla and Oglesby solidified their positions among the state’s elite.

The defending state champion China Spring Cougars (3-2) dropped back to No. 5 in the Class 4A, Division I state rankings after a 38-22 loss to Dallas Parish Episcopal, while the Stephenville Yellowjackets (3-2) re-entered the poll at No. 6 with their 21-20 win over Wichita Falls Rider.

Without representation in the Class 4A, DII, Class 3A DI, Class 3A, DII Top 10 rankings, the Heart of Texas placed six teams in the smaller two classifications.

Class 2A, DI includes the third-ranked Tolar Rattlers (3-1), while the Crawford Pirates (2-2) dropped out after suffering their second loss of the season. The perennial powerhouse Mart Panthers (5-0) held on to second in Class 2A, DII with a dominating 64-0 district opening win over Meridian Yellowjackets.

In six-man football, the Abbott Panthers (5-0) held at No. 3 with a 62-32 win over Avalon while the Jonesboro Eagles (4-1)stayed at No. 5 by crushing Stephenville Faith, 90-0, in Class 1A, DI. The Oglesby Tigers (4-0) continued to hold down the second-ranked spot in Class 1A, DII with a convincing 38-19 win over Waco Methodist Children’s Home.
