RISING TO THE TOP: WEEK 6

With one new team moving into the state’s top 10 rankings, the Heart of Texas still claims nine places among the elite in the polls

Moving into the sixth week of the 2024 Texas high school football season, one new Heart of Texas squad moved into the state’s Top 10 teams in Class 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A.

Coming out of the first five weekends of the season, the Heart of Texas region claims nine teams among the state’s best, including Class 4A, Division I’s Stephenville Yellowjackets (5-0) dropping one spot to No. 2 after a hard-fought 38-28 win over Waco LaVega, while Class 4A, DII’s seventh-ranked Robinson Rockets (4-1) held firm with a 48-22 victory over Hillsboro.

Although the region does not have a state-ranked team in Class 3A, the Class 2A, DI’s Hamilton Bulldogs (5-0) broke into the rankings for the first time at No. 10 by staying undefeated with a 40-21 win over San Saba, and Class 2A, DII’s top-ranked Mart Panthers (3-1) solidified their ranking with a 28-22 district opening victory over previously fourth-ranked Bremond.

Teams ranked in the six-man football Top 10 include Class 1A, DI’s second-ranked Abbott Panthers (5-0) held its spot with an impressive 88-38 win over Borden County, sixth-ranked Jonesboro Eagles (4-1) dominated Stephenville faith, 59-0, and the eighth-ranked Aquilla Cougars (5-0) buried Hillsboro Hill County, 63-6.

In the Class 1A, DII poll, Iredell Dragons (3-2) dropped five spots with a resounding 62-14 loss to Class 1A, DI’s fourth-ranked May Tigers (5-0), while Oglesby Tigers (3-2) climbed a spot to No. 4 by knocking off Coolidge, 54-8.

Class 4A, DII’s previously eighth-ranked Glen Rose Tigers (3-2) dropped out of the rankings with a 70-51 loss to Class 4A, DI’s fifth-ranked and undefeated Alvarado (5-0), while Class 1A, DII Sidney Eagles (3-1) fell out of the poll from No. 6 after suffering a 60-14 loss to third-ranked Cherokee (4-0).
