RISING TO THE TOP: FINAL POLL

With squads wrapping up the regular season, the Heart of Texas claims eight places among the elite in the state’s final top 10 rankings before the postseason

Moving into the 2024 Texas high school football postseason, eight Heart of Texas squads held their own among the state’s Top 10 teams in the final state rankings for Class 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A.

Wrapping up the regular season, the Heart of Texas region claims eight teams among the state’s best, including Class 4A, Division I’s Stephenville Yellowjackets (9-1) held on to No. 4 with a resounding 51-7 victory over Burnet while Class 4A, DII’s 10th-ranked Waco La Vega Pirates (7-3) held onto their spot with a 41-21 win over the Lorena Leopards.

In the season’s final poll, the Heart of Texas region earned a state-ranked team in Class 3A, as the Tolar Rattlers (9-1) made their first appearance at No. 10 in the Class 3A, DII rankings with a 35-7 victory over Eastand.

In Class 2A, Hamilton Bulldogs (10-0) finished the regular season undefeated to hold on to its spot at No. 10 with a hard-fought 35-28 victory over the DeLeon Bearcats, while Class 2A, DII’s previously top-ranked Mart Panthers (8-2) plummeted all the way down to No. 9 with a 46-0 loss to Goldthwaite.

Teams ranked in the six-man football Top 10 include Class 1A, DI’s second-ranked Abbott Panthers (10-0) crushed the previously seventh-ranked Aquilla Cougars, 58-8 in a district title matchup to knock Aquilla out of the poll, while the Jonesboro Eagles (8-1) moved up to spots with a convincing 60-30 victory over the now eighth-ranked May Tigers.

In the Class 1A, DII poll, Iredell Dragons (8-2) held on at No. 7 with an open date in the schedule, while the Oglesby Tigers (8-2) remained at No. 3 spot with an overwhelming 64-0 victory over the Evant Elks.
