KEENE OPPORTUNITY: Cubs win thriller in West, sets up showdown

CLIFTON – Capitalizing on a dominating fourth quarter performance, the Clifton Cub boys basketball team rallied to slip by the West Trojans, 51-49, to a key District 17-3A road win Tuesday night.

In a showdown for fourth place in district, the Cubs (4-4 in district, 16-8 overall) will host Keene (4-4, 10-10) at 5 p.m. Friday in the Clifton High Gymnasium.

Trailing 40-32 going into the final period, the Cubs outscored West, 19-9, down the stretch to come from behind against the Trojans. Senior TJ Ferch led Clifton with 17 points, followed by junior Luis Rodriguez with 14 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

Sophomore Griffin Phillips tossed in eight points, while senior Everett Sadler added six and sophomore Jorge Rodriguez dished out a team-high seven assists.

In other District 17-3A action Tuesday night, first place Grandview knocked off Keene, 62-49, Whitney defeated Rio Vista, 70-41, and Maypearl crushed Harmony School of Innovation, 57-17.

Friday’s district matchups include Grandview (8-0, 16-12) visits Rio Vista (1-7, 7-17), Maypearl (7-1, 14-7) hosts West (3-5, 13-12), and Waco Harmony (0-8, 0-11) travels to Whitney (5-3, 9-11).
