Advancing to the Area playoff round, Class 1A, DI defending state champion Blum, 12th-ranked Jonesboro & 16th-ranked Abbott top the list of Heart of Texas hopefuls

THE SPORTS BUZZ Gridiron Matchups presents the Class 1A Six-Man football Area playoff matchups from across the Heart of Texas region.

In Class 1A, Division I postseason action, the defending state champion Blum Bobcats (7-3) took their first step toward a repeat with a 58-28 Region III Bi-District playoff win over Coolidge to set up am Area playoff battle with 14th-ranked Saint Jo (9-1) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Bridgeport.

Also in Region III, the 16th-ranked Abbott Panthers (11-0) remained undefeated with a convincing 51-6 victory over Avalon. Abbott will face ninth-ranked and undefeated Union Hill (10-0) at 7 p.m. Friday at Scurry Rosser.

In Region IV, the 12th-ranked Jonesboro Eagles (10-1) overwhelmed Nueces Canyon, 54-8, to set up an Area playoff showdown with fourth-ranked May (10-1) at 6:30 p.m. Friday in Dublin.

In Class 1A, DII playoff matchups, the 15th-ranked Morgan Eagles (8-3) fell to the 19th-ranked Gordon Longhorns (8-3) in a Region III Bi-District playoff game in Gorman, while the young Walnut Springs Hornets (7-4) were eliminated by 11th-ranked Strawn at Hico’s historic Tiger Stadium.

In a Region IV Bi-District playoff matchup, the District 14-1A, DII champion Oglesby Tigers (10-1) advanced by knocking off 20th-ranked Oakwood, 62-52, Friday night in Penelope. Oglesby will face sixth-ranked and undefeated Richland Springs (9-0) in an Area playoff matchup at 7 p.m. Friday in Hico.
