GRIDIRON GRADES: WEEK 8

At the top of district standings as well as state polls, Grandview & West in Class 3A; Crawford, Tolar & Mart in 2A; Abbott, Blum & Jonesboro in Class 1A, DI; Oglesby, Bluff Dale & Morgan in Class 1A, DII own frontrunner spots

As district races saw the cream rising to the top in Class 3A and 2A last week in the Texas high school football regular season, most districts in Class 1A six-man divisions will open district competition in Week 9.  

With the West Trojans (5-0 in District 7-3A, DI, 6-1 overall) hosting the third-ranked Grandview Zebras (5-0 in 7-3A, DI, 6-1 overall) and the top-ranked defending state champion Franklin Lions (3-0 in 11-3A, DI, 7-0 overall) visiting the 10th-ranked Lorena Leopards (3-1 in 11-3A, DI, 6-2 overall) in huge showdowns for district supremacy, Class 3A action grabs the spotlight in the Heart of Texas this week.

In other key Class 3A matchups, the Comanche Indians (2-0, 6-1) will put their District 5-3A, DII lead on the line when they visit the Dublin Lions (0-2, 2-5), while the Clifton Cubs (0-2, 1-6) hit the road to take on the ninth-ranked Lexington Eagles (2-0, 7-0) in District 13-3A, DII.

Showcase matchups in Class 2A feature the third-ranked Crawford Pirates (4-0, 7-0) hosting the always-dangerous Bosqueville Bulldogs (2-2, 3-4) in District 8-2A, DI, and District 5-2A, DI co-leading Bangs Dragons (3-0, 5-2) will try to knock the No. 7 Tolar Rattlers (3-0, 7-0) from the undefeated ranks, while the Wortham Bulldogs (4-0, 7-1) hope to challenge the top-ranked and perennial powerhouse Mart Panthers (3-0, 7-0) for District 10-2A, DII supremacy.

In Class 1A, DI six-man football, the top-ranked Abbott Panthers (1-0, 7-0) will be coming off an open week by playing host to the Coolidge Yellow Jackets (1-1, 3-5) in District 12-1A, DI, while the Blum Bobcats (2-0, 3-4) will hit the road to face the winless Three Way Braves (0-1, 0-5).

As the class of the region’s representatives in Division II, the fourth-ranked and undefeated Oglesby Tigers (8-0) will be idle as District 11-1A, DII opens, but two Bosque County rivals will face off at the Cranfills Gap Lions (5-2) will visit the Walnut Springs Hornets (3-4) in THE SPORTS BUZZ Game of the Week, while the Morgan Eagles (4-3) will hit the road to battle the pre-season favorite Bynum Bulldogs (2-5) in the District 10-1A, DII opener.
